Located in the southern portion of the Piedmont region of North
Carolina, Indian Trail is situated astride US 74 approximately 15 miles
southeast of Charlotte in Union County, which is among the 25 fastest
growing counties in the United States. The town derived its name from
the Native American path that wound through this area.
Incorporated by the North Carolina State Legislature in 1879, Matthews
has grown from a one square mile town with 191 residents to 14 square

including Family Dollar, Harris Teeter, Conbraco, Carotek, and

Taking its name from the Waxhaws, an historic Native American tribe that
inhabited the region, Waxhaw has evolved as an antique and fine dining
center. Its Small Town Main Street committee is working on an integrated
approach to developing and marketing the historic center of town. The
Town currently has dozens of specialty shops and dining ranging from mom
& pop restaurants to fine dining bistros. The Waxhaw Historic
District is on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes
retail businesses as well as architecturally significant houses near the
center of town.
